THE GRIDWISE LANDSCAPE

PNNL is spearheading stakeholder outreach activities by assisting the GridWise Alliance and U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) GridWise Program in creating mindshare and cooperation in related efforts and by encouraging regional GridWise initiatives.

GridWise Alliance

The GridWise Alliance is a non-profit consortium of companies and organizations whose members share the vision of transforming the U.S. electric system through innovative new technologies. PNNL is providing assistance and support to the GridWise Alliance on behalf of the DOE. Battelle, which supports PNNL and other labs for DOE, is one of the founding members of the Alliance. The GridWise Alliance is serving as a locus of industry cohesion and exchange of ideas surrounding GridWise. In collaboration with the DOE GridWise Program (as set forth in the Memorandum of Understanding of March 25, 2004), the GridWise Alliance is actively providing a forum for engaging stakeholders, sharing information and establishing open working groups on key topics affecting the development and implementation of the GridWise vision.

DOE GridWise Program

The DOE GridWise Program is a newly formed program for 2005 within the DOE Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability. It began with a small effort as the Advanced Communications and Controls Program in 2002. It subsequently was combined with the Distribution and Interconnection Program in 2004 to form the Electric Distribution Transformation Program, out of which evolved the GridWise Program.

Efforts Related to GridWise

Important efforts exist within the research communities, the electric power sector and industry which border on GridWise efforts. PNNL is actively coordinating with these groups to ensure that its GridWise activities are complementary and mutually constructive.

These efforts include:

Regional GridWise Initiatives

The Pacific Northwest presents a locus of activities and interest groups related to GridWise. PNNL and other regional stakeholders are working with the Northwest Energy Technology Collaborative to bolster smart energy opportunities and reinforce the Pacific Northwest's role as a leader in the progress toward the GridWise vision.
