Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Unveils GridWiseTM Initiative to Test New Electric Grid Technologies. Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is teaming with regional utilities and industry in a first-of-its-kind demonstration involving 300 homeowners in Washington and Oregon who will test new energy technologies designed to improve grid efficiency and reliability while increasing consumer choice and control.
The GridWise Architecture Council announced the successful conclusion of the Constitutional Convention held December 6-7, 2005, in Philadelphia, PA. More than 110 delegates attended the convention designed to establish consensus surrounding fundamental principles and amass buy-in from a broad base of stakeholders in the application of information exchange to the effective operation of the future electric power system. GridWise Architecture Council (GWAC) member, Jack McGowan led the BuilConn energy track; and GridWise champion, Robert Pratt, was a keynote presenter at BuilConn, addressing questions surrounding building connectivity and Building-IT Convergence. Other GridWise presenters at BuilConn included GWAC members Rik Drummond, Wade Troxell, and Erich Gunther.

PNNL senior researcher engineer, Krishnan Gowri, presented GridWise in a panel discussion at the XML Symposium, exploring enabling technology for the future of integrated and intelligent buildings with a specific focus on the HVAC industry.
The Northwest Energy Technology Collaborative (NWETC) spotlighted 12 innovative energy technology companies, including PNNL. PNNL was recognized for its Grid FriendlyTM controller device, a power management technology for use in household appliances.
Public Utilities Fortnightly published "IT Roundtable: The Digitized Grid," exploring three perspectives of the direction the industry is heading.
PNNL organized and led the first Power Markets Summer Study Session, entitled "Designing Effective Power Markets for the 21st Century: Pacific Northwest Region." This highly stimulating study session brought together brilliant academicians, top planners and industry thought leaders from the Pacific Northwest, and prominent researchers.
On July 13-15, 2004, the 12 confirmed members of the GridWise Architecture Council attended their first face-to-face meeting in Denver, Colorado. The Chronicle of Higher Education published an invited commentary by Rob Pratt and former staff Steve Hauser on the role education can play in the energy system of the future.
AutomatedBuildings.com, an on-line magazine, invited Rob Pratt to describe "Bringing the Electricity System into the Information Age" for the automated buildings industry.
The GridWise Architecture Council is confirmed.
PNNL hosted a GridWise Smart Energy Day presenting PNNL technical innovations that support the smart energy agenda of the nation and the Pacific Northwest region and setting the basis for a regional smart energy agenda.
An historic Memorandum of Understanding between the DOE Office of Electric Transmission and Distribution GridWise Program and the GridWise Alliance was signed. The MOU provides a coordinated framework for collaborative public/private efforts to develop new energy and information technologies for a more reliable and efficient electric system throughout the United States.
The GridWise Architecture Council Call for Candidates is now closed and the selection process is underway.
The GridWise vision is presented at the American Association for the Advancement of Science annual meeting in Seattle symposium entitled "Bringing the Electricity System into the Information Age."
National Lab Contributes to Power Grid Alliance
GridWise is first presented at a third industry workshop in Skamania, Washington.
A second industry workshop is held at Reston, Virginia, to help shape the scope of a federal program for advanced communications and control of the power grid.
The Energy Systems Transformation Initiative receives its first funding from PNNL.
The first industry workshop exploring the transformation of the electric system is held at Keystone, Colorado.
